Deforestation

Deforestation > When forested areas are converted to non-forested areas. It is important to know about Deforestation because people are removing trees and forests faster than they can be replenished which contributes to extinction.

History > Deforestation has been used for hundreds of thousands of years. At first, deforestation was used strictly for space. Now, humans have blown this quality out of proportion because we now rely on deforestation for industrial reasons. This has now become an environmental issue.

Uses > Deforestation has many uses. Some of these are for logging industries, urban areas, agriculture, mining and for war.

Examples > The Amazon rain forest is the largest tropical forest in the world. Since 1970, when the Trans-Amazonian was built, deforestation has grown to an alarmong rate and has increased over 40% by 2001. Every year, about 19,800 km of rain forest are lost. Another example of deforestation is the many kilometers of savannah and jungle that have been wiped out in Africa due to logging, war, cattle raising, agriculture, mining, overgrazing and fires.

Social Issues > One social issue cause by deforestation is extinction because it wipes out the homes and habitats of many animals that live in these areas. Another social issue is that regions are not able to hold as much water because of the lack of vegetation. Soil erosion is another issue because of the loss of plants due to deforestation.

Facts to consider

  • If the rate of deforestation that we are at right now continues, all of the worlds rain forests would be destroyed in the next 100 years.
  • Presently, 12 million hectares of forests have been cleared on an annual basis
  • An area of forest about the size of 20 football fields is lost every minute
